Guide to Focus and Momentum.

Sometimes it’s really difficult to stay focused on a task that we find boring or uninteresting and we can find ourselves procrastinating. Ok, maybe more than sometimes. I put together this guide to focus and momentum because  I’m a self-proclaimed master procrastinator. I figured others probably have a similar problem so I set out to find ways to help me to put a loving pressure on myself to access my flow state when I can’t seem to stay away from the distractions.

What is Procrastination?
Procrastination is doing something you shouldn’t be doing when you know you should be doing something else. When we get distracted by every new shiny thing we give away our power. We lose the ability to reach out for and accomplish our goals. Our overall life quality is restricted when we are unable to control our awareness.

Eat And Sleep Better.

Experiment with your eating and sleeping patterns and find out how much you need to optimize your energy levels. Some foods will drain your energy and make it much harder for you to concentrate.

Move More.

A quick walk in the fresh air, dance or stretches can give you that extra energy boost you need to step back into your focus and momentum.

Know The Price.

What would happen if you didn’t get focused? What would it cost you? I’m not talking about just money I’m talking about time, relationships, opportunities etc. Take a look at why it might hurt you to not get in that chair and get focused.

Build-in Breaks.

Set a timer and work until the times up. 90 minutes is optimal for me.

Notice Your Triggers.

What is the thing that seems to distract you most? Do you get hungry? Make sure you have a snack or drink nearby. Do you end up scrolling on social media? Get an app to block yourself. Do you need silence or music?

Embrace Discomfort.

Whe we can feel oourselves slipping away from the task at hand just tell yourself to do it for ten more minutes. Then repeat. Many people find they can tap into flow after around 20 minutes of focus.  That’s where the real progress happens.

Embrace Imperfection.

Sometimes we procrastinate because we’re afraid of failure or getting it wrong. But if youre able to embrace imperfection for a little while and get it done. you can spend time later ironing out the kinks and making it all look better. Mistakes and imperfection are a given and they help us learn and grow as a person. don’t let it hold you back.

Eliminate The Non-Essential.

The decisions, the (mental and physical) clutter, the multi tasking, the distractions. When you make it that little bit harder to get to the things that distract you or make you have to burn out your willpower the only thing left to do is the job at hand.
Say no to the things that get in the way of your dreams and goals including other people’s priorities. let go of anything that doesn’t get you closer to your goal.


This is a great way to overpower your mind and the distracting thoughts that stop us from overthinking and constantly being distracted. Meditation brings you back to that present moment.

Define and Get Crystal Clear On Your Emotional Why.

Intention is everything.

Plans and routines are great tools for automating the things that you really want to have in your life.

What is the real reason that you need to do this job? Who do you want to be? what do you want to create? what will your legacy be? Who do you want to help? Will your goal or task bring you close to your fulfillment in the long run? Write it down, break it down, plan it out and take action. Keep your why at the center of your attention. Pin it up around our environment, set reminders so you see it regularly.

Let it Go.

Stop being so frustrated. If your task will bring you closer to your dreams and you are clear on what it is then it should not cause you frustration. If it does not bring you closer to your dreams then it’s totally ok to delegate or let it go.

Stop Being on Demand.

Let go of or schedule whatever comes up in the moment. Other people out there are very good at delegating so they can accomplish their dreams. the only way you ill drop off of their list of people to come to for urgent jobs is if you make it clear that you will no longer be available.

Overall: Know Yourself.

When do you work best? Are you an early bird or a night owl? What triggers or distracts you? How long does it take you to get back on task once you’re distracted? Once you know more about yourself you have more ability to reframe your thinking and adjust your behaviour. This is where true momentum will grow in your life and you will become truly unstoppable.

I hope you found a few useful tips in this list that will work for you. Remember, always have a plan, complete with a reward system. When you have something to look forward to at the end of a boring task it starts getting easier to stick to the task at hand.     I find that writing a quick list and prioritizing helps me get over the mind to procrastinate!
